FME Community Schools Will Be Thru Remote Education this Fall

Update: Aug 6. Governor Inslee has announced a statewide plan for remote education in schools this fall. His decision reiterates Dr. Chen’s decision from a few days ago.

No one seems particularly excited about the idea of remote, virtual learning for students in schools this fall. It’ll be hard on students, teachers, parents, employees and employers. But the rise in Covid-19 cases has resulted in Dr. Chen, Director of Public Health in Pierce County, recommending what is sure to be an unpopular decision. No school is to open for in-person education in September this year in Pierce County.

In a recorded Zoom call with him yesterday, Dr. Chen discussed what went into the difficult decision and his recommendation. While he recognizes that this decision will have a huge impact, a domino effect, if you will, on students, families, and businesses, it is what he sees, for now, as the only safe option.

Schools and Education

The Fife, Milton, and Edgewood communities are served by 3 school districts: Fife, Puyallup, and Sumner-Bonney Lake School Districts. And all 3 have announced that they will not re-open schools in September to in-person learning. Instead all will offer online or remote school options for all students.

Fife School District, for example, states, “As is always the case in our schools, the first responsibility of our district is the health and safety of our students, families, and staff.” The other schools have similar sentiments. The school districts are working hard to figure out how to make this the best possible learning situation given the circumstances. All recognize that remote learning this spring was far from ideal, but that this fall, there has been some time to plan.
