8th Grade STEAM Career Day

With Covid-19, our plans for STEAM Day 2020 are, unfortunately, on hold indefinitely.  But read on, as a reminder of the fun work we did in 2019 and to see what the Chamber intends to do again as soon as we can.  Modifications will have to be made, of course, but we are dedicated to the idea of connecting our students to their future opportunities in the workforce!

Designed to connect local students with local businesses, allowing businesses to contribute to workforce development by showing students career options in their futures!

Thank you to Videos Crafted and Impresa Digital for this wonderful video of STEAM Day 2019.

The FME Chamber, in partnership with the Fife School District are proud to host the 2019 8th Grade Steam Career Day event.  Students will learn about many careers right in their own back yard through business tours and an interactive and fun career fair.

The idea behind the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)  career day with the Fife School District is to connect students with local businesses.  We see this as a benefit to both students and our local industries. This is a pilot program for 2019, and the career day is set for Tuesday, October 15.  It is our hope to continue it on an annual basis, and in 3 years, expand and reach out to these same students, a second time, when they are in 11th grade.

For 8th grade students, this career day is intended to:

Introduce them to jobs/careers that they may not have been exposed to and may not know even exist.

  • Get them thinking about what steps they would need to take to get involved in these fields
  • Make them aware of what they can do to start planning for their high school and post high school lives
  • Have them think about potential apprenticeships or internships after graduation (or even before)
  • Give them a chance for some career development research

For our local businesses, STEAM day offers an opportunity to:

  • Be involved in exposing students to the jobs that are available right here in our community
  • Be a part of investing in the future of our students
  • Encourage students to consider careers right here in Pierce County
  • Plant seeds of what you’ll need in employees, and thereby contributing to workforce development
  • Spread the word about any internships or apprenticeship programs that you offer or need filled

The basic timeline for the day includes:

  • Morning tours of industries/businesses near the port area
  • Afternoon “Career/Job” Fair at the EQC
